Don’t Take a Chance on a Policy Lapse

If you live in GA and drive a car, you are required to buy auto insurance. But what happens if you have a policy and it lapses? Our team at The Insurance Mart Inc., serving Blue Ridge, GA, explains.

Don’t Take a Chance on a Policy Lapse

An insurance lapse occurs when the start date of a new auto insurance policy is more than 10 days after the termination date of an old insurance policy. It can also occur when you cancel an auto insurance policy, but there is no notification of a new policy received within 30 days of that termination.

The best way to prevent a lapse is to make sure the start date of a new auto insurance policy is the same as the date you cancel a previous policy. According to the Georgia Department of Revenue, if a lapse occurs, you will be charged a lapse penalty and a fine. The fine will initially be $25, but it could increase up to $160 if the fine is not paid within 30 days.
